My Idea of What Irish Dance Is

Well hello! Thanks for continuing to read this blog, I'm glad you weren't bored after the first post. :) I'm guessing most people reading this are either Irish dancers, or they know an Irish dancer, or something like that. But, I just have to explain what I think Irish dance is.

Pretty much, I'll some up what I think Irish dance is by answering the common statements or questions asked by people how... just don't really know what Irish dance is.

1. "Oh! You Riverdance. That's cool."
A: Well... Riverdance isn't type of Irish dance. It's a performing group of people who do Irish dance. Basically, the show Riverdance is performing Irish dance.

2. "Your dance competitions are like beauty pageants and are so overrated."
A: That's a bit insulting, but I can't say I haven't heard it before. It's like saying a soccer tournament is.. well I don't know what to compare that to. Honestly, yes, there is makeup, wigs, fake-tans, diamonds, expensive dresses, etc.  But we don't get judged on how dressed up we are. We get judged on how well we dance, which can take effort. In my opinion, it's fun to get dressy and fancy everyone once-in-a-while.

3. "I can do Irish dance! Watch!" *The person jumps and shuffle their feet randomly*
A: This is what bothers me most of all. I don't know, I guess it bothers me because it sounds like they are making fun of dance, which isn't nice at all, because I certainly don't make fun of playing soccer or football or something. (By the way, it's more than jumping and shuffling feet randomly) :)

4. "Dance is not a sport! Especially Irish dance!"
A: Of course Irish dance is a sport! We dance around and work so hard to get our dances write. It's ton of fun too! :) I heard this from another dancer; dance is sport, you can look it up in a dictionary and it will say this:
Sport: An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
That's exactly what the dictionary says and I think Irish dance fits under that category.

Well, that's all I have to say! I hope you enjoyed this post, and I'm really sorry if I sounded obnoxious!

Until next time,
A Reel Irish Dancer

:)
